A sexual addiction within a relationship erodes intimacy between two people. Sex addicts frequently feel shame, guilt and a sense of powerlessness. They attempt to keep their addiction a secret and fear that they will be exposed. When their sexual acting out behavior is identified the spouse has an overall sense of betrayal, anger and powerlessness. Sexual addictions are emotionally painful for both partners. There is a lack of honest communication and transparency necessary for a healthy relationship.
Some sex addicts spend many hours at their computer compulsively logging into a multitude of pornography websites. Typically there is a specific fattish website that is repeatedly viewed. Others scan “hook up” websites trying to find anonymous sexual partners. Some sex addicts have a history of short or long term affairs over the course of their marriage. A sex addict may spend many hours and a considerable amount of money at a strip club or hiring prostitutes. Such behaviors expose the unaware spouse to sexually transmitted diseases (STD). The sexual addict’s behavior frequently causes devastating consequences. The sexual addict knows his sexual acting out behavior is harmful and risky. However, he does not have the skills to change his compulsive behavior
